Background

McKinnon was named Detroit police chief in 1994. He retired as police chief in 1998 and went into teaching and consulting. He holds a doctorate in higher education administration from Michigan State University, a master’s in criminal justice from Mercy College of Detroit, and a bachelor’s in history and law enforcement from the University of Detroit.

Detroit Deputy Mayor Isaiah (Ike) McKinnon, who first joined the city’s police department more than 50 years ago, will announce his retirement from the city Wednesday, effective July 1.

Mayor Mike Duggan appointed McKinnon deputy mayor after winning the election in 2013.  McKinnon specialized in working with the fire department and in helping with the mayor’s faith-based initiatives.

“I’m honored to have served with Mayor Duggan, and I am proud to have been part of our city’s turnaround,” McKinnon said in a statement provided to the Free Press. “Although I’m leaving this job, I will not be leaving the city, and I will continue to educate and speak out for our youth and the poor. I will continue to do whatever I can to have an impact on their lives and in our city.”

Education

Doctorate in higher education administration from Michigan State University, a master’s in criminal justice from Mercy College of Detroit, and a bachelor’s in history and law enforcement from the University of Detroit.
